The Rancher across the road raises a few exotic bird species, currently he has three Emu’s. Large birds capable of chasing off Coyotes, they are bigger than the canine predators equipped with huge claws on the end of their legs the birds are well armed.
He has Sheep, Goats, Cattle and many species of birds. Chickens, Peacocks and Peahens are among the population. There are no longer Turkeys, wild or otherwise, he could not afford to feed them any longer. I passed his large Chicken coop one day when it had been overcome by Turkeys who had elbowed out the domestic birds. Twenty of the large wild birds were jammed into the feed box while the locals perched and watched.
The Emu’s have plenty of pasture to roam in, they live a good life. I’ve not seen them run or be in a hurry for any reason. Nor do they make a sound as far as I can tell, but I haven’t been around them much at all. They are right at home during the heat of the day, if there is water available they will stay in the fence.
